Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a first-person shooter branded with the name of Tom Clancy, an American thriller writer. It's a free-to-play game developed by Ubisoft (specifically its San Francisco team).
Mechanics
As a first-person shooter, the game is mostly competitive. Players form teams and battle each other on special arenas, wielding pre-made weapon kits and special abilities possessed by chosen units.
Each playable character has unique skills distinguishing them from the others. Spies from the Echelon group are known for surprise attacks, disorienting their opponents and intercepting valuable intel. Libertad members are typical support units - their abilities buff and heal allies within their range. The factions present within the game have been borrowed from other Ubisoft series branded with Tom Clancy's name, such as Splinter Cell and The Division.
The game also features a wide roster of weaponry and over 40 additional equippable items. Its up to us which weapons and sidearms we'll wield, which mods we'll install and which gadgets we'll equip to dispatch our foes and achieve our goals. It's worthwhile to systematically adjust our gear to the conditions on the battlefield.
Game modes
The game focuses on competitive 6v6 multiplayer on closed maps. Firefights are extremely dynamic. Players fight to fully control the given territory (two relevant modes are Domination and Occupation).
There are also two linear game modes - the first, Zone Control, divides teams into attackers and defenders, competing over a moving target. The second, Escort, focuses on transporting cargo.
Technical aspects
XDefiant features 3D visuals, many battlefields taken directly from popular Ubisoft games and a large pool of unique maps, preventing the battles from becoming repetitive. It also supports cross-platform gameplay.
The game is divided into seasons. Every three months, XDefiant receives new content - new weapons, maps, events and a faction. This means that the game will receive four new factions, twelve weapon models and twelve maps in a year.
Open Beta
The game was presented during Ubisoft Forward 2023. Several important pieces of information was revealed during that time as well. The open beta of Tom Clancy's XDefiant was scheduled to start on June 21 and end on June 24, 2023 (all over the world, on the PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5). The first pre-season phase of the game will be spread over six weeks. It includes a total of 14 maps, 24 weapons, 5 modes and 6 factions.
